Carlisle Spring Show and Sale - Saturday 13th May

A young bull from James and Peter Weightman proved to be the star attraction at the British Blonde Society’s Spring Show and Sale at Harrison and Hetherington’s Borderway Centre on Saturday, 13 May, when their Hallfield Scotty not only secured the Championship at the pre-sale show, but also matched the breed record price of 12,000gns.

With cattle meeting a 100% clearance throughout, it was the Weightmans’ Hallfield Scotty that led the way but that is perhaps no surprise as his genetics have sold well here before – his dam, the Hilltop Hector-sired Hallfield Mia, also produced the 12,000gns Hallfield Plato sold in 2021, while his sire, Aaron Jaigo, also bred last year’s sale topper, Hallfield Rory. Forking out the cash for this November, 2021-born lad was Sean Mitchell of the Hutton Herd near Skelton, Penrith.

The Weightmans from near Easington, Peterlee, also welcomed a 4000gns bid from TR Craven, Whinberry Herd, Wilberfoss, York, for Hallfield Solomon. He offers some different breeding being by Jiggywigs Oscar and out of Hallfield Marianne, a Blackwater Ainsley daughter.

Next best 5000gns was Lucy Corner’s Lucyland Simon from Aycliffe, County Durham. This Reserve Male Champion from last year’s Great Yorkshire is sired by Bridge Jonty and was born in January, 2021, out of Hallfield Gypsy, another by the Blackwater Ainsley bull. He caught the eye of Billy Laird and heads to work in the Lochhead Herd near Kirkcaldy.

Females peaked at 3500gns for Lucyland Sally, a similarly aged Bridge Jonty daughter which sold to MR and GS Jenkins, Bower, Wick, scanned in calf to Silverwood Salah. Her dam is Kinaston Hope, a Bridge ET daughter.

Averages: Five bulls, £5607 (7 x £5715 in 2021); two females, £2888 (1 x £2520).
