This Breeding Report has been published by Signet Breeding Services in association with the British Blonde Cattle Society.  Both Signet and the Society continue to encourage all breeders of British Blonde to record.  More records give a truer picture and greater accuracy in the figures for individuals. It is becoming increasingly evident that users of British Blonde genetics are looking for accurate performance records when making selection decisions.

We believe that the figures in this document, if used sensibly, can be of benefit to pedigree and commercial breeders.

Search for Signet Recorded British Blonde Cattle on the Internet

Signet is pleased to announce the development of a new web based search facility that enables pedigree breeders and bull buyers to access information held on the BASCO database.  The new search engine, designed by EGENES at SAC, offers a quick way to find and view the breeding records for recorded Blonde cattle.
Information held on the database includes

  • Performance (Estimated Breeding Values and Breeding Indexes)
  • Progeny
  • Pedigree
  • Ownership

The search facility enables cattle to be located on the basis of their name, identity or breeder. The “EBV Search” facility enables potential buyers to find cattle that meet their specific breeding objectives.

Using The Sire and Dam Summary Tables
Individual breeders are likely to have different objectives depending on their target market and the current merit of their herd. The first step in using the Sire Summary to select potential bulls of interest is to decide which traits are of importance. It may be that a number of traits are important, but the fewer the traits considered, the more progress will be made in each of them. On the other hand, if excessive selection is made for just one trait, without regard for others, penalties might arise. For example, selecting bulls with high EBVs for 400-day growth without taking account of the EBVs for birth weight may give rise to increased levels of calving difficulty.

When selecting a sire due account might be taken, in addition of temperament, to other features such as fertility and locomotion, as well as shape, colour and inbreeding

How to read the Sire and Dam Summary
1 Official registered name of bull and name of its sire and dam.
2 Name of bull's current owner (or owner of semen if the bull is no longer alive).
3 The herd prefix of the bull's current owner (or owner of semen if the bull is no longer alive or has been sold to non members of BBCS).
4 Official ear tattoo.
5 Animal's date of birth (day/month/year)
6 Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and accuracies (%) for all traits.
